William Rand Obituary

William (Bill) Chapman Rand, 93, of Old Saybrook, CT, husband of his late wife Gail Marie Rand, passed away peacefully on May 27, 2023, surrounded by his loving family during his final days. Born in Old Town, Maine on January 12, 1930, he retired from Pratt and Whitney after 40 years of dedicated employment. Bill will be remembered for the great man he was and the positive impact he had on his family and friends. Bill took great pride in the fact he grew up in Maine. He played basketball, football, and ran track while attending Old Town schools. It was after graduating from school that Bill met Gail in Old Town and moved to Hartford, Connecticut. They married in 1951 and he was proud to have loved and admired her for the next 70 years. Eventually, he settled his family in East Hampton where they raised their five children. During the years that followed, his family grew to include fourteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Bill took great pleasure in making his family laugh, sharing his many treasures with them, and providing his unconditional love. He spent endless hours tinkering in his yard and creating “Billy Brook Park'' behind his home for all to enjoy. He loved playing golf, horseshoes, Setback, and riding his bike backwards to entertain the neighborhood children. He loved old coins and accumulated quite the collection throughout the years. Bill and Gail enjoyed traveling to many places around the country and each year would return to Maine for a family vacation. They eventually retired to Old Saybrook where they relaxed and enjoyed magnificent views of Long Island Sound. Bill loved to visit with his friends while touring the neighborhood on his golf cart. He was an avid fan of the UConn Women's Basketball team, New York Yankees, and the New York Knicks. Bill is survived by his five children: Kathleen Erlandson, Valerie Stockburger (Donald), Wayne Rand (Maria), Mary Beth Julian (Daniel), and Cheryl Rand; thirteen grandchildren: Jason Stockburger, David Erlandson, Scott Erlandson, Melanie Warren, Meaghan Rand, Steven Rand, Ashley Tuchmann, Taylor Rand, Arden Rand, Emilie Ackerman, Olivia Revicki, Jenna Julian, Ally Julian; twelve great-grandchildren: Talan and Kayl Stockburger, Wade and Keily Erlandson, Neilly, Wyatt and Bridey Erlandson, Grady and Mason Warren, Grayson Nix, Freya and Faryn Tuchmann; sisters Doris Dearing and Bertrice Smith; brother-in-law Joseph Ferraro; sister-in-law Nadia Rand; several nieces and nephews; and longtime friends Michael and Theresa Brady. Bill was predeceased by his father and mother Warren and Madeline Rand; granddaughter Anita Ackerman; brothers James and Warren Rand; and sisters Carolyn Coughlin and Barbara Walsh. A private burial has been arranged for the family. A public reception and greeting of the family will be held at 12 Billow Road, Old Saybrook, CT on Friday, June 2, 2023 from 4pm - 6pm.
