Robert Heuffel Obituary

Robert Lewis Heuffel, a decorated Vietnam Veteran, philanthropist, lifelong sportsman, and longtime resident of Middle Haddam, Connecticut, passed away quietly on April 15, 2026, at the age of 78. Born on May 25, 1947, in Flushing, New York, Robert lived a life of quiet courage, generous spirit, and deep devotion to the pursuits and communities he loved.

Robert answered the call of service during the Vietnam War, where his valor under fire earned him two Purple Hearts. His wartime service – remembered by those who knew him in connection with Patrol Squadron 48 (VP-48), the “Boomerangers,”- marked him for the rest of his life with steady humility and a quiet respect for those who had served beside him. He spoke of his time in uniform rarely, and always with the understatement of a man who had seen much and asked for nothing in return.

After the war, Robert made his living in the investment industry. In 1995 he purchased his home in Middle Haddam. He was an avid sportsman and polo player. The friendships he forged on the field were among his most cherished. Robert brought the same qualities to every pursuit: a competitor’s fire, a gentleman’s grace, and an unmistakable love of the game.

Equally defining was Robert’s generosity. A devoted philanthropist, he gave thoughtfully and often quietly to causes that mattered to him. Those who benefited from his kindness rarely knew its source, which is precisely the way Robert preferred it.

Robert was predeceased by his beloved mother, Helen Stergin Heuffel, and his father, Louis Heuffel. He leaves behind no immediate surviving family, but he leaves a wider family of friends, fellow veterans, teammates, neighbors, and admirers- all of whom will carry a piece of him forward in the stories they tell and the kindness they pass along.

In keeping with the quiet dignity that marked his life, memorial arrangements will be announced privately. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Robert’s memory are invited to make a contribution to a veteran’s service organization.
