Mila Smith Obituary

Mila (Kuritz) Smith, 97, passed away peacefully in her sleep on February 2, 2026 at Fox Hill nursing home in Vernon.. She was a lifelong resident of East Hampton, daughter of German immigrants Fred and Mila (Jordan) Kuritz, and will be sadly missed and joyfully remembered. Mila is predeceased by both her first husband Robert W. Read Sr, and second husband David L. Smith and by three of her children, Andrew, Holly and Kenneth Read. She leaves two surviving children, Robert W. Read Jr. of East Hampton and Daniel L. Smith of Manchester and a grandson Alan Gilman. She is also predeceased by her sister Lillian (Kuritz) Joy and Fredrick Kuritz.

Mila was born in Chicago in the roaring 20’s, lived in New York City as a small girl before moving to Haddam Neck/ East Hampton where she spent the remainder of her long and adventurous life. She loved to tell how as a young girl she would skip to the schoolhouse in Middle Haddam chanting “ I’m gonna live to be 100!” …and she sure did come close. Mila and her sister Lillian went back to NYC after high school to pursue acting/ modeling careers but it wasn’t for them.  Mila was a lifelong advocate, mentor and example for women’s rights. She was owner of MK Smith Realty in the 1960’s when only men dominated the field. She revived her father’s business (MacKensey’s Homemade Peanut Brittle) after his passing. She was an Instructor of Parapsychology at Middlesex Comm. College and a CT licensed Hypnotherapist. She also was a member of the East Hampton Ethics Commission. Above all this, Mila tried her best to keep the  family a priority.

Many people in town remember Mila for her uncanny psychic abilities. She helped countless people with Tarot card and psychic readings. She always felt close to the white light of the spirits and angels, forever seeking to be of more service to all who would open their minds and hearts to her. Mila spent her last days and moments doing what she loved most..as she came closer to the other side,  she helped  others cross as well. Thanks to all the outstanding Nurses and CNA’s who cared for her at Fox Hill Center in Vernon.
