John E. Basso, 60, of East Hampton and formerly of Haddam Neck, beloved husband of Elizabeth (Rogers) Basso passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday June 21st at his home. Born in Hartford, he was the son of the late Harry William and Phyllis (Hale) Basso. John had a wicked sense of humor, and was a master of jokes and one-liners. He wanted to be remembered with a smile. John began working for Hubert Butler at 16, and ended his career working as an Operations Manager for Hubert E. Butler Construction until his illness. John was a 1981 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Middletown. He was active as a volunteer fireman for most of his adult life, first in Haddam Neck and then in East Hampton Company #2 in Cobalt. He was also active in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts as an Assistant Leader. Besides his wife, he is survived by his daughters Rachel Park (husband Brad) of East Haddam; Celia Basso of East Hampton; two beloved grandsons Vince and Mason Basso and daughter-in-law Shae Kogut of FL; brother Harry Basso of Portland, sisters Mary Ann Nilsen (husband Russell) and Jane Selavka (husband Michael) all of Florida; his mother-in-law Gayle Rogers of VT, and many loving in-laws, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Evan Basso, with whom he is now reunited, and his sister Vicky Basso. Friends may call at the Spencer Funeral Home 112 Main St. East Hampton on Monday June 26th from 5PM until 8PM. Funeral services will be held Tuesday June 27th at 11AM in the funeral home. Burial will be private in Rock Landing Cemetery in Haddam Neck at the family’s convenience. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the East Hampton Volunteer Fire Department.
