Daniel “Jay” Young, 57, of Marlborough, beloved husband of Denise Young for 37 years, passed away suddenly surrounded by family members on April 6, 2025. Born in Manchester, CT, son of Judith (Moore) Varrichio and the late Daniel P Young, he lived much of his life in Marlborough. Jay was also fortunate to have a second, much-loved mother in his life, Francie Houston.
Jay was employed by the Department of Transportation for nearly 40 years. Everyone who worked with him knew of his enthusiasm for railroad engineering and long-term planning for future railroad operations. Towards the end of his career, he particularly enjoyed mentoring younger engineers.
Jay was the consummate handy man, building additions, decks, garages, and helping friends and family with their projects. Jay was always available to lend a hand to anyone in need whether it was repairing a broken snowblower or hauling boxes for someone that was moving. He was also an avid car enthusiast and enjoyed cruising in his Camaro ZL1 with his wife.
In addition to his wife and best friend, Denise, he leaves behind his children Daniel and partner Victoria and Jeffrey and wife Helen. As everyone who ever met him knows, Jay loved and was incredibly proud of all of them. He also leaves behind his mother-in-law, Marge Bartlett, who he considered to be his mom, his sister Kim Kamins (Jay), his brother Greg Young (Leigh-Anne), his sister in law Karen Sousa (Chris) and his sister in law Diane Ayer (Judd) and numerous nieces and nephews. Jay was predeceased by his brother Gary Young. Most importantly, he leaves behind his granddaughter Elise who was his best buddy and whom he adored.
Many thanks go out to all those who helped during his fight with cancer. Jay wouldn’t have had the strength to fight as long as he did without their caring and support.
A funeral service to honor Jay’s life will be held Saturday April 12 at 11 am at the Marlborough Congregational Church. Relatives and friends may also call at Spencer Funeral Home 112 Main St, East Hampton, CT on Friday April 11 between 5-7 pm. Jay thoroughly enjoyed his life and in Jay’s honor, everyone attending is requested to wear clothing that they are comfortable in and need not be in dark colors unless they prefer.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Jay’s memory can be made to the Marlborough Congregational Church Memorial Fund or the American Cancer Society Pancreatic Cancer Foundation. To leave online condolences please visit www.spencerfuneralhomeinc.com.
