James Francis Breen Jr, 85, of the Cobalt section of East Hampton passed away peacefully at home after a brief illness with his son-in-law Chris by his side on Monday September 2nd. Born on December 19, 1938, he was the oldest child of James Francis Breen Sr and Katherine (Blazensky) He was preceded in death by his wife of 27 years Angela (Platinsky) and his brother Richard Breen.
Born and raised in Glastonbury, Jim was a 1956 graduate of Glastonbury High School where he excelled in nearly all sports, particularly baseball, basketball, and soccer. He served for six years in the Air National Guard. He began his career as a plumber apprentice for Glastonbury Plumbing and Heating where he assisted in work on hundreds of Connecticut homes. With that knowledge and inherent work ethic, he went on to become a pipefitter and worked for United Technologies Pratt and Whitney division for 34 years. Simultaneously, he continued his own plumbing work and of course being the “on call” plumber for family and friends. In retirement he enjoyed traveling all over the United States and later developed a love for woodworking: crafting children’s toys, American flags, furniture, and even sheds for family and friends.
Jim had a deep love for his family and treasured the time he was able to spend with them. He is survived by his children: sons James Breen of Santa Cruz, CA; David Breen of Lebanon, CT; and daughter Alison Breen (Christopher Caines) of Cobalt, CT. Additionally, his siblings Robert Breen of Boise, ID; Thomas Breen of Glastonbury, CT; Katherine Breen Crohan of Arlington, MA, Francis Breen of Manchester, CT; and Michael Breen of Glastonbury, CT. He also leaves behind a granddaughter April, a Godson Stephen, many of nieces and nephews of whom he adored, and many friends through all stages of his life from his high school breakfast club to the local setback league.
A Funeral Liturgy will be held at 10:30 a.m. at St Mary’s Church 45 Freestone Ave, Portland, CT. Burial will follow in the family plot in St. Patrick Cemetery, 17 Maple Street, East Hampton, CT. Friends may call at the Spencer Funeral Home, 112 Main Street East Hampton, CT on Friday from 5-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to East Hampton Ambulance Association PO Box 144, East Hampton, CT, 06424.
