Jack Karl Ayer Sr., 53, of Hebron, beloved husband of Alyson (Portelance) Ayer, and loving father to two amazing sons Jack Jr and Alex Ayer, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday evening at his home. Born Dec. 29, 1970, in Windham, he was the loving son of William and Mara (Vimba) Ayer of North Windham and formerly of Coventry, CT. Jack was a graduate of Coventry High School where he was an all-state three sport athlete.
Jack graduated from the University of Hartford with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communications. While there, he was a scholarship athlete where he was a guard, leading the UHart Basketball team in 3 pointers and three-point FG percentage.
Jack shared his love of sports with his two sons, coaching them throughout their whole lives. He volunteered his talents as a youth coach in Hebron for soccer, baseball and basketball and most recently coaching at the high school level at RHAM High School. He loved the kids and received much satisfaction from the relationships he built with his athletes and their families. He derived the most pleasure from watching his sons play and was always eager to show his love and support for them.
Jack was employed as a Corporate Executive Recruiter with Medtronic of Minnesota. He built his career over many years and has maintained countless friendships that were cultivated through business relationships along the way. He was a person who took an interest in others and loved to engage in conversation. He gave the best hugs, made people feel important and loved.
In addition to his parents, wife, and sons he is survived by his two brothers Thomas Ayer (Amy) of Eastford, Kyle Ayer (Lynn) of Andover, his mother and father in-law Thomas and Elizabeth Portelance of Griswold, his brothers-in-law Thomas Portelance Jr. (Joanne) of Avon, Timothy Portelance of NC, by his many adored nieces and nephews, and four adorable great nephews.
There will be a celebration of Jack’s life and memorial service at RHAM High School auditorium 85 Wall St. Hebron, CT, on Nov. 1st from 5:00-9:00pm. With the memorial service from 7:00-8:00 followed by a reception also at RHAM.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial donations be made in Jack’s memory to the Jack Ayer Sr Memorial Scholarship Fund for student athletes.
