Gary Nichisti Obituary

Gary Nichisti Sr, 88, of East Hampton, passed away Sunday, April 13. Born August 2, 1936 in New Britain, CT he was the son of the late Joesph Nichisti and the late Beatrice (Daniels) Nichisti.

Gary grew up in New Britain where he met the love of his life, the late Edith “Honeygirl” (Kowalski) Nichisti. They married June 22, 1957, and lived in New Britain prior to moving to East Hampton in 1976.

Gary was a devoted husband and father. He and Honeygirl purchased a cabin on the Salmon River and the family had the best summers from the time their children were very young. He loved the outdoors (only in the warm weather) and campfires, singing, playing guitar, fishing, boating and just having fun with family and friends. Gary would spend hours watching auctions and classic cars on YouTube, dreaming about owning one. He always knew when someone was baking or cooking, especially pie. He will be most remembered for his story telling. His family all know the stories word for word, however never tired of listening to them and laughing until they were in tears. It was a “story” that captured Honelygirl’s heart on an early date. Gary had a way of making everyone feel special and wanting to spend time with him. He and Honeygirl made many friends throughout life, including at both the East Hampton and East Haddam Senior Centers. They loved playing cards and just socializing in every capacity. Not many people have had such an amazing love story that never ended. Gary is resting in peace now with Honeygirl and their late son Gary Nichisti Jr. whom he missed immensely.

He is survived by his daughter Darlene Dubowsky and husband Alan, grandchildren Scott Guinazu and wife Andrea, Lisa Varni and husband Mike, and Jason Dubowsky and Cheyenne, great grandchildren Olivia Varni, Logan Varni, Kolton Dubowsky and Braxton Dubowsky, daughter in law Leslie Nichisti, sister-in-law Rejeane Nichisti in addition to many nieces and nephews and numerous other extended family and friends.

In addition to his parents, wife and son, he is predeceased by brothers, Joseph Nichisti, Ronald Nichisti, sisters Phylis Klimowski and June Siwicki and nephews Steven Nichisti and Edward Siwicki.

Calling hours will be held Tuesday, April 22, from 1-3 pm at Spencer’s Funeral Home, 112 Main St, East Hampton followed by a brief service. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
