Candice Hartzell Obituary

Candice Ann (Rickards) Hartzell of Middletown, CT, loving and well loved, passed away July 2, 2021 in Hartford, CT. Candice was born in Bangor, Maine on March 2, 1949 to George (Ted) and Orlie Rickards. She was the second of six children, the oldest of four girls. As a young child, they moved and lived in Middletown and Portland where Candice attended Portland High School, prior to moving to Moodus.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          Candice was a long time and active member of the First Church of Christ, Congregational in East Haddam, where she met and married James Hartzell. They lived in East Haddam for many years, where they raised two daughters, Barbara and Carol.                                                                                                                                                                                       Candice has been a resident at Luther Ridge in Middletown. She served as secretary of the residents’ council and was an active member of the Red Hat Society. Candice was also a member of the Rebekah's Lodge 49 in Portland, CT. Candice loved to knit and, like many of her generation, she loved Elvis Presley. Most importantly, Candice loved to laugh.                 Candice is predeceased by her parents, Ted and Orlie Rickards; sister Harriett, daughter Barbara, and her former husband, James. She is survived by her brother Tedford of California, sister Christine of Virginia, brother Clinton of Connecticut, and sister Lynn of South Carolina. Candice is also survived by her daughter, Carol, of Connecticut and five grandchildren - John, Ashley, Tedford, Ryan and Austin, in addition to many nieces and nephews.                                                                                                                                                                                    A memorial service celebrating Candice’s life will be held at First Church of Christ, Congregational in East Haddam Monday, July 12 at 10:00 AM.                                                                Donations in lieu of flowers may be made in Candice’s memory to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.
