Bernard J. “Bernie” Hoyland, 81, of Marlborough, widower of the late Carolyn A. (Bellmore) Hoyland passed away Thursday December 12th peacefully at his home. Born May 14, 1943 in Hartford he was the son of the late Caroline (Engel) Dirrigl and Sverre Harry Hoyland. Bernie lived in Marlborough most of his life and is a graduate of RHAM High school. He built his home there in 1979 where he raised his family. Bernie proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the start of the Vietnam war, serving in South Korea at the DMZ. Bernie had worked as a plumber until his retirement. He was a Life Member and 13 time Past Commander of the Marlborough American Legion Post 197, and a Life member of the East Hampton VFW Post 5095. Bernie was awarded the greatest honor in the legion, the Legionnaire of the Year award for his tireless service. He enjoyed fishing, the Green Bay Packers and NASCAR. Bernie was a devoted family man, and is now reunited with his beloved wife of 50 years Carolyn. He was always the life of the party and made everyone around him laugh. He committed his life to his family, friends and community. He is survived by his son Marc Hoyland and his wife Melissa of Hebron, daughter Marcy Flori and her husband Ryan of Ellington, two sisters Dorothy White of Maine, Barbara Geremia and her husband Gregory of Meriden, three brother in-laws George Bellmore Jr and his wife Adele, and Thomas Bellmore, both of West Suffield, and Ronald Ostrowski of Suffield, grandchildren Dylan and Derek Calsetta, step grandchildren Brian Cole and Riley Wescott and his great grandson Maverick, along with many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his biological father Francis Setterberg and brother Francis Hoyland. Friends may call at the Spencer Funeral Home 112 Main St. East Hampton on Tuesday Dec. 17 th from 6:00PM until 8:00PM. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Wednesday Dec. 18th at 11:00AM. Followed by burial with Military Honors in Marlborough cemetery.
