Josie Binder Obituary

Josie Binder, 101, wife of the late Alfred Binder passed away Monday October 28th at Portland Care and Rehabilitation Centre. She was born on May 22, 1918 in Hammonton, NJ to the late Frank and Catherine Varalli. Josie is survived by her daughter Catherine Beyer and her husband Charles of East Hampton, grandson Tommy Grote and his wife Carrie, grandson Jason Beyer and his wife Michelle, granddaughter Debbie Matchett and her husband Scott, and her beloved great grandchildren Cody, Max, Maya, Cole and Finley. Josie centered her life around her family, whether helping to raise her sibling’s kids or teaching her grandkids how to cook and bake, Josie always had her family in mind. She grew up farming which led to her passion for gardening, she was known for her homemade Sicilian tomato sauce which was often times canned for fresh sauce over the winter months. When she was not making tomato sauce, she could be found canning other vegetables or making jams and jellies all from her own garden. Josie spent many years working as a seamstress on 7th Ave. in Manhattan where she learned many more skills that she was able to pass down to her family along with a profound love for the New York Yankees. She was not only a skilled seamstress but also could crochet quite well. Besides her husband, she was pre-deceased by her brothers John and Frank Varalli and her five sisters, Elizabeth, Annie, Rosie, Mary and Antoniette.
